For a family with children looking to go on a camping trips, one of the large camping tents available is often a key piece of equipment. Unlike a backpacking tent which is meant to keep one to four people in relative comfort and dryness while being as lightweight as minimalist as possible, large camping tents are appropriate for larger groups of people and will usually prioritize size and comfort over being lightweight. They are usually used for “car camping” where the tent is set up not far from the vehicle. In this case, the tent may be quite heavy and bulky but this usually isn’t a problem since it doesn’t need to be carried more than 10 or 20 feet. Large car-camping tents tend to be relatively inexpensive compared to backpacking tents because they use normal and cheap materials like steel and plastic instead of more exotic, lightweight and expensive materials like aluminum tent poles.
The main advantage of large camping tents is of course their size. First, many larger camp tents are high enough that an adult can step inside while standing up instead of stooping over or being forced to crawl in on your hands and knees. Needless to say, this is much more convenient and feels more like stepping into a temporary room than crawling into a claustrophobic tunnel. They also tent to have greater floor area which means that more people can sleep inside, or each person can be more comfortable and less cramped. It’s not uncommon for larger camping tents to have space for blow-up mattresses or cots which can make sleeping at night dramatically more comfortable and luxurious.
Some large camp tents even have multiple chambers that each have their separate outside doors, and are connected by a tunnel. This is practical if parents and children want to be able to sleep separately and don’t want to go to the extremes of setting up separate tents. Other tents will have a “porch” area that is screened in to keep out bugs and can be a good place to eat a meal or keep your gear.
